This project transformed an underutilized front yard into a welcoming outdoor living space designed to spark connection with family and neighbors. By removing a large palm tree—both to reduce fire risk and to make room for climate-appropriate shade—we introduced five diverse trees: Fern-Leaf Ironwood, Desert Willow, Mountain Mahogany, Engelmann Oak, and Honey Mesquite. These species were chosen to cool the wide, heat-reflective street and create a more hospitable microclimate. Half of the rock and desert plants in the bottom section of the garden were replaced with lush native vegetation inspired by the home's San Gabriel Mountain back drop, softening the landscape and attracting pollinators.

A new seating area was installed at the upper level, enhanced by a hugelkultur berm for privacy. A gently curving path now connects the seating nook to the back gate and water inlet. We also repositioned the bird fountain and integrated natural stone to create a more inviting water source for wildlife.
As these plantings mature, the space will provide shade, beauty, and a cooler refuge for people and wildlife alike—truly a front yard that invites neighbors in for tea, conversation, and community.
